THE NATURE REPORT
September 2001
Home page

Early in the month I took this picture of a Dragonfly on some nettles its wingspan must be about 100mm.

September has also been a good month for the Crane fly or "Daddy Long Legs" as it is known.

Darren the gamekeeper says his pheasants are very partial to them. This is one pictured in our porch.

The fruits and berries of the hedgerows are now ripe these pictures show:

Hawthorn berries, ripe Sloes, Elderberries and Rosehips and Blackberries. I have seen wood pigeons eating the Elderberries next month they will be feeding on Acorns.

All our Swallows went by the end of the 3rd week of September and this week the fly population seem to all be in the buildings looking to hibernate.

The cows also seem to sense a change for the colder milking sees me covered with cow hairs as they are currently moulting.

More next month when I will feature some of the autumn colours on our trees.

See you next month, Phil
